Designed for Pharmasave at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, this outpatient pharmacy combines healthcare services and retail into a clear, welcoming and high-performing environment.

The challenge

Located within Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, the Pharmasave outpatient pharmacy needed to serve both hospital patients and the local community through two independent access points while ensuring a clear and intuitive customer journey.
The existing space required a complete reorganisation to improve circulation, increase product visibility and simplify access to both retail and clinical services. At the same time, the design had to accommodate three private consultation rooms, including a vaccination clinic, while transforming an existing structural constraint into a defining architectural feature.

The solution

Our design approach is centred on intuitive circulation, retail clarity and patient comfort.
The layout clearly organises the pharmacy into dedicated retail, prescription and healthcare zones, creating a seamless experience for patients while supporting efficient workflows for pharmacy staff. Product categories are carefully arranged to improve visibility and encourage intuitive navigation throughout the space.
A sculptural tree surrounding the existing structural column transforms a technical constraint into the visual focal point of the pharmacy, strengthening orientation while introducing warmth and a welcoming atmosphere within the hospital environment.
Transparent display units guide visitors from both entrances towards the prescription counters, while the waiting area provides a comfortable transition between the retail and clinical functions.
Three private consultation rooms located behind the dispensary expand the pharmacy’s healthcare services, supporting vaccination programs, professional consultations and personalised patient care.
The result is a contemporary outpatient pharmacy that combines healthcare, retail and operational efficiency within a welcoming environment designed to enhance both the patient experience and the quality of pharmaceutical care.
